Hunger and food insecurity are issues of rising significance in the United States, as a gulf of inequality between the haves and the have-nots widens as a result of higher costs of living, increasingly-specialized job markets, and an inability to save from wages earned. In America, 35 million people were affected by hunger in 2019. This number ballooned to a whopping 50 million in 2020 due to the coronavirus–as unemployment lines and food pantries were pushed to the center of our collective consciousness. And while no one thing–save for dealing with shutdowns and wearing a face mask–can really characterize the experiences of all Americans, everyone from regular individuals, to activists, to corporations, have felt morally compelled to do their part in helping those most in need.

It is for this reason that Seal the Seasons is proud to announce its donation of 188 cases of its Michigan/Ohio Peach Berry Blend to the Greater Chicago Food Depository, located in Chicago, IL.

As a part of “a united community effort working to bring food, dignity and hope” to Cooke County residents, the Greater Chicago Food Depository connects more than 700 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and community aid programs to places where they are most needed. Along with providing food for families in need, the food depository also provides specialized services for specific groups of people such as the elderly, veterans, and children. Finally, the Greater Chicago Food  Depository takes its mission one step further by trying to address the root causes of hunger, by providing job training programs that give people the professional skills to lift themselves out of poverty.

Seal the Seasons supports The Greater Chicago Food Depository because it is more than “just another charity:” they take a multifaceted, and holistic, approach to enacting social good. As a local food company that is committed to social good, we wish more places were like The Greater Chicago Food Depository–so working with them to combat hunger for Chicagoans was kind of a no-brainer.
